The image to the right shows the Lely Pumping Station, named after Cornelis Lely (responsible for the Zuiderzee Works, which meant the enclosure of the Zuiderzee by means of the Afsluitdijk. See also IJsselmeer) to the north of Medemblik. The cubist building (executed in whitewashed concrete) was designed by Dirk Roosenburg in 1927 and built in 1930, hence the Art Déco influence. It is one of two pumping stations built to keep the Wieringermeerpolder dry.
