Newsletter number 7, 8 October 2008
Dear Cadet Friends,
September tried its best to let us forget summer, but October is finally bringing storm and rain to CadetCity Medemblik and the IJsselmeer. How different it was this Summer: the weather exceeded expectations (we actually had wind AND sunshine, courtesy of our prominent sponsors the weather gods); the venue was great; the participants competitive and fun loving; and the sailing results were surprising to say the least... In the end Belgian National Champion Quinten Lauwers with his crew Nele de Munck made a worthy Cadet World Champion 2008.
The successful Delta Lloyd Cadet World Championships 2008 were made possible by the warm support and hard work of all our excellent and inexhaustible volunteers and more-than-generous sponsors. We would like to thank them all once more for their trust in this event and their unfailing support.
Of course your presence as participants; parents; officials; fans; family and friends made this event to what you all experienced. We thank you all for joining us!
To experience more happy CadetCity memories, especially visual memories, please check our Photo Tours (and the site of our event photographer Ronald Koelink).
Hopefully we’ll meet again in Almería, Spain, for the European Championships 2009 and/or in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for the Cadet World Championships 2009.
Nautical Regards,
Arjen F. Pels Rijcken
Chairman

News Update
The Delta Lloyd Cadet World Championships 2008 delivered a new World Champion! Reigning Belgian national champion BEL 8518 Quinten Lauwers and Nele de Munck are the new Cadet World Champions!
Although handicapped by a bad knee--Quinten had to sail the Worlds with a leg brace!--Quinten and his crew Nele proved to be no match for the competition. 5 second places and 2 first places left them 7 points ahead of the second spot held by Joanna Freeman and Holly Francis from Great Britain.
We have been told Quiten is moving on to the 470 class. We wish him all the best in the future!

Looking good today! All competitors in the Worlds Fleet are launching for the last two (deferred) races of the event. The competitors in the Promotional Fleet are expected to launch in half an hour. Some rain is to be expected in the course of the day.

News Update
The races planned for today have been called off due to the weather conditions. Bad thunderstorms with bursts of lightning from the southwest hung over the IJsselmeer and made it impossible to start: safety first...
Our resident photographer Ronald Koelink has done his best to produce spectacular material. A preview can be found in our photo section.
In our section Regatta Online you can view the races in the Promotional Fleet as they commence (LIVE!) and the races in the Worlds Fleet in replay after the last finish of the day. Regatta Online is brought to you by our partner and sponsor ChampionChip Racing. Sunday we counted 4,000(!) live viewers. The average time spent online was no less than 20 minutes which is an eternity on the Internet!
We publish provisional results on a daily basis as soon as they are made available by the racing office.
Master of Ceremonies
The Closing Ceremony will also be hosted by actor/comedian Greg Shapiro of (Comedy Theatre) Boom Chicago-fame (http://www.BoomChicago.tv). And yes, it is really him; and yes, he is married...

Newsletter number 6, 16 July 2008
Dear Cadet Friends,
Here in CadetCity Medemblik we are counting off the days. In just little over a fortnight we hope to welcome you all for the official opening of the Delta Lloyd Cadet World Championships 2008. Here’s the latest update.
The website has been updated daily for the past few months. Most of the site can now be visited without logging in (it is almost in “event mode” as we call it). We’ve had some questions about the necessity of registering for the site. The answer is easy enough: over 400 Cadet-enthusiasts (including ex-cadet sailors from India and Latvia) from 17 (!) different countries have registered since we went on-line over a year ago. They all—and that includes you!—left their e-mail address for us to send newsletters to. Which in turn resulted in 179 entries: 358 competitors from 14 countries (update 16 July). And originating from visits to the website we’ve even received information requests from magazines as far away as Singapore...
Track and (T)race
With the help of the ICC we are now able to supply all Cadets with the Tracker free of charge. We have found extra sponsors to pay for this advanced system. The races are broadcasted live in CadetCity. The Promotionals are live on the internet and the Worlds are broadcasted on the internet after the last race of the day. The races will then be available for replay on-line.
Each Team Leader will pick up the trackers at the Regatta Center and also deliver them back after each racing day.
Daily Photo’s
Our event photographer Ronald Koelink will sell photo’s of the races and social events at his booth in CadetCity for very reasonable prices. His info can be viewed at http://www.cadet2008.nl/146/sponsors/foto-nautiek/
Daily Bread: CadetCity Restaurant
As mentioned earlier our CadetCity Restaurant will be open each and every day during the event. It will serve
breakfast (from 08.00–10.30 hrs)
lunch (from 12.00–14.00 hrs)
dinner (evening meal) (from 18.00–20.00 hrs)
Fried snacks will be available from 14.00–18.00 hrs and from 20.00–22.00 hrs.
Students of the renowned Hotelschool The Hague (member of Leading Hotel Schools of the World) are responsible for food and beverages. Prices will of course be favourable and befitting a youth event.
CadetCity Passe Partout
The CadetCity Passe Partout can already be called a success judging from the advance bookings. At this moment close to a hundred competitors, parents, officials and sponsors will join us every night for dinner in our CadetCity Restaurant!
A CadetCity Passe Partout for evening meals comprises of 10 evening meals from 29th July until 7th August. This includes an evening meal sponsored by Argentina Turismo (http://www.cadet2008.nl/89/sponsors/argentina-turismo/), the Argentinian Tourist Board.
The price of this CadetCity Passe Partout, if ordered in advance by mail (passepartout@cadet2008.nl) before noon on 29th July will be €110.00.

ALL participating Cadets will be supplied with a ChampionChip Tracker X5 Outdoor GPS. Everyone will be able to follow the races real time on the internet, whether at home (e.g. by family and friends!) or in CadetCity (on a big screen!). This tool is also very useful for analysis of the races after they have taken place. However we cannot supply it without asking for a small contribution. The Dutch Cadet Class Association has—for educational reasons—guaranteed the basic cost of this advanced system acquired by the organizing committee. For only €25.00 per boat you can have your Cadet appear live on Internet (the boat will then be identifiable by its sail number). The tracker can be obtained at the registration desk.
CadetCity
CadetCity comprises of both the tent where all social events will take place, and the camping site next to the Regatta Center. Inside the tent smoking is not permitted, due to the nature of the event.
Food & Beverages
In the tent, meals and drinks will be sold at favourable prices. Students of the renowned Hotelschool The Hague (member of Leading Hotel Schools of the World) are responsible for F&B. They will prepare all the meals during the event.
In the morning CadetCity will open for breakfast and stay open all during the day for lunch, coffee or a leisurely drink in our lounge corner or in front of the big screen.
At dinner time there will be a choice between meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. A passe partout for 10 meals can be bought for as little as €8.50 per meal in advance booking (see passe partout).
Cadet Currency
At the registration desk you can buy our Cadet Currency (coins). This will be the ONLY means of payment in CadetCity during the event. Passe partouts for evening meals can be ordered in advance at a discount, or purchased at the registration desk.

Final Equipment Inspection and Control Scheme (i.e. Measurement)
The Equipment Inspection and Control Scheme has been established in cooperation with the ICCA. The Scheme includes the following: hull, sails, spars, foils, rigging.
Hull: weight; beam at chine; position mast step block; and presence of ISAF plaques.
Sails: dimensions of mainsail, headsail and spinnaker; presence of ICCA labels; and measurer’s signature.
Spars: positions of bands on mast and boom; length of spinnaker pole.
Foils: weight; thickness.
Rigging: ratchet block in boat, soft loop on boom for main sheet; position headsail halyard block; and acceleration on spinnaker halyard (not allowed).
It is intended that all boats entered for the Worlds and some of the boats (chosen at random) entered for the Promotionals will be subject to equipment inspection as mentioned above before the racing commences.
During the event there will be checks on rigging and safety on all boats. It is intended that a number of the best ranked boats will be checked for rules compliance immediately after coming ashore, daily during the event.
The Event Measurer or his deputies may also inspect or check other items either at equipment inspection time or at other times or places (for example on the water) at their discretion.

The registration fee is € 225 per boat if registered before June 1st, 2008. After this date the registration fee will be € 275 per boat. Each boat/helm is requested to send in the original registration form by regular (air)mail to our secretary:
Stichting WK Cadet 2008
Javastraat 10
2585 AN Den Haag
The Netherlands
The National Cadet Class Associations shall inform us no later than July 1st, 2008 which boats will participate in the Worlds and which boats will participate in the Promotionals.
Payment
For efficiency and administrative reasons we request that all National Cadet Class Associations collect the registration fees from its participating members and transfer the total amount to our bank account no later than July 1st, 2008. Transfer details are mentioned in the Notice of Race, which is published on our website.
Team Leader
Please inform us who will be the main contact person or team-leader for your delegation. All relevant contact details should be sent to info@cadet2008.nl
Measurement
The Dutch organisation of the Cadet Worldchampionship 2008 has the intention to continue hull shape measuring as done last year in Wales. Of course we respect the ISAF interpretations on the class rules. In addition we will probably ask owners of a boat which was first measured between 28th February 1974 and 31st December 1994 and which has not been altered or repaired to declare this by their best knowledge. In general boats have to comply with the class rules. Apart from the hull we are going to measure all sails and certain running rigging regulations. In March we will present a complete measurement programme including the promotional fleet, approved by the ICCA.
Rescue
Please read the Notice of Race carefully. In article 13 it is stated that European countries shall provide one rescue boat during the whole event. Non-European countries are also invited to do the same. Please confirm the availability of the rescue boat before June 1st, 2008 to info@cadet2008.nl.
Camp Site
Preparations are being made for a Cadet camp site. In order to choose the right option we would like to know how many people are planning to use this site with either tents or campers. Please indicate a.s.a.p. through info@cadet2008.nl
30-01-2008 (date of publication): --------------------
Newsletter number 1, January 2008
Dear Cadet friends,
Here is the first Cadet 2008 World Championships newsletter! During the coming months you’ll receive even more containing interesting information about the event in Medemblik, the Netherlands.
Website Cadet2008.nl
Most of you will already have noticed the progress we’ve made with the development of our official site. As of now you can register yourself on the site; meet other Cadetters around the world through the “forum”, obtain specific information and even be able to play games. The registration is open to any Cadet sailor, parent or child, coach or trainer, participant or otherwise.
Country Dinners
After registration you will be able to see the Social Events Calender on our website and notice that several foreign embassies are sponsoring our organization by hosting themed dinners and a lunch during the Worlds. So far we have commitments from Poland, the Czech Republic and Argentina. Hungary and Belgium are interested and we hope to announce in the coming newsletter that these two countries will also co-organize a national dinner.
RIBs
Should you want to rent a rib during the Worlds in Medemblik you can make use of the special arrangement we have made with Ron Meijer Marine Services. There are three types of boat available:
Joker Coaster 470 @ € 185 per day
Joker Coaster 540 @ € 210 per day
Joker Coaster 650 @ € 275 per day.
If you are interested please let us know a.s.a.p. so as to make the reservations on time.
Participation Sponsorship
This month we have reached more than half of our sponsoring target - so we’re getting there! For you as sailor it’s useful to know that you can participate free of charge if you introduce a so-called Participation Sponsor. This company or person sponsors € 500 and will have their logo and/or name hyperlinked on our website.
Dutch Open
It was our intention to organize the Dutch Open directly prior to the Worlds. But because of the heavy program involved and the importance to be fit and well prepared for the Worlds, it has been decided to cancel these matches. Instead we have “upgraded” the practice race. One Dutch company will sponsor the practice race. Nevertheless you can enter the Dutch Open during the Dutch Youth Regatta. Please follow this link.
Measurements
Soon you will be informed about the focus of the Measurers of the Worlds 2008. There are still some discussions about certain issues. To be continued…
19-01-2008 (date of update): --------------------
